At Essential Assessment, we provide educators with a structured and continuous approach to formative and summative assessment fully aligned to the strands, sub-strands, outcomes, content organisers and indicators of the new NSW Syllabus K-10. Our assessment and curriculum model delivers consistent assessment and reporting data in alignment with the syllabus and guides differentiated instruction throughout the teaching and learning cycle.
Our assessment and curriculum model provides online and paper-based pre- and post-assessments and differentiated currulum tools from K-10 which supports classroom teachers to assess their way in alignment with the syllabus and in addition design flexi-assessments for Units of Work to align to the new NSW Syllabus' Big Ideas'.
Essential Assessment helps assess students confidently and accurately to measure achievement and growth against not only the outcomes, organisers and indicators of the new NSW Syllabus K-10 while aligning data to the Numeracy and Literacy progressions. This unique approach helps to support consistent parent curriculum reporting, Plan 3 reporting data requirements, instructional leadership, create assessment-capable learners, and deliver whole-school improvement in Numeracy and Literacy.
Essential Assessment partner schools can assess students from the start of the 2023 school year in alignment with the new K-2 Syllabus and connect with new 3-10 Syllabus assessments and activities in Mathematics and English, perfect for those schools who are early adopters of the new 3-10 Syllabus.
When Was the NSW Syllabus Last Updated?
The review of the NSW Syllabus was announced on 14 May 2018. This was the first comprehensive review of the entire school curriculum since 1989 and set to reform public schools in New South Wales.
Why is the Syllabus changing?
Using the new K-10 curriculum, teachers will spend less time on non-essential learning and compliance, giving them time to concentrate on deep learning within a systematic framework that better prepares them to support students for future education and work. Focusing on mastering the basics of Numeracy and Literacy in the early years, K-2 students will progress with the foundational knowledge to help unlock their potential to become successful learners.
What are the key features of the new curriculum?
The new curriculum's key feature is ensuring every student establishes a strong foundation in each learning phase to prepare them for the next step in their learning journey, and includes:
Strong foundations for learning, life and work
Learn with understanding
Skills in applying knowledge
Excellent ongoing progress
Build foundations in the early, middle years and later years
Core learning across the years of school
General capabilities including literacy and numeracy
Progress in HSC subjects
What Major Changes Have Been Made?
Mathematics
The learning area in Mathematics will enable K-10 learners to become confident using and applying mathematical concepts. By building connections to Mathematics syllabus content and outcomes students develop the essential knowledge, understanding and skills to successfully investigate, problem-solve and understand the complexity of real world situations.

exploring and connecting mathematical concepts
choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems
communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly.
Growing student knowledge and understanding is interrelated and connected in the content embedded into:
Number and Algebra
Measurement and Space
Statistics and Probability
English
The overarching goal of the learning area in English will enable K-10 learners to understand and use language effectively. By building connections to English syllabus content and outcomes students develop the essential knowledge, understanding and skills to successfully progress their learning in Understanding Texts and Creating Texts throughout stages K-10 in English.
